Weekly Recap: Bananas Close in on Home Field Advantage Throughout Playoffs with Dominant Week

Written by Biko Skalla:

The Nanners had another rather unreal week in what’s been a surreal summer. The guys came in 28-6, with a 2 game lead over the Peninsula Pilots for the best record in the CPL as the two 2021 powerhouses race for home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The guys started the week with a well deserved two days off, a calm before the storm that would be six games in six days starting on Tuesday. It was a great sign of things to come in the week when 2018-2019 Banana, Jake Sullivan, signed with the Washington Nationals, making him the 10th former/current Nanner to sign with an MLB team this summer. Then we had some random cat order matching banana costumes for him and his baby online and things were really rolling at that point…

The fellas were going to practice Monday night but got rained out. It was also supposed to be team picture day, and that happens rain or shine…

At this point I can hear the screams coming through my laptop screen, “Let’s just get to the baseball Biko!”, and the baseball shall come, the baseball shall come, but obviously the Nanners had to go viral one more time before the wild week of games could actually begin. In this edition of the Bananas dominate baseball Twitter, it was Nick, “Who Could Have Imagined How Far Eating That Cockroach Would Take Me?”, Clarno, smashing Banana Cream Sodas over his head and then his bat over his knee right before one of his Banana Ball at-bats…

Clarno garnered over 4 million views on Tik Tok and racked up reposts from just about every major baseball account on Twitter and Instagram. Decent start to our Tuesday, which would end with the Spartanburgers coming down for round seven on the summer. When it came time to get revved up for the first of six games in a row, the guys turned to Adele to get the mood right…

I couldn’t think of a better way to kickoff what was a bittersweet evening, as it was the final night in Savannah for Nathan, I’m Not Crying Someone’s Definitely Cutting Onions in a Concession Stand, Dettmer. The freshman out of College Station went 3.1 innings, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 4. It was the first outing all summer for Nathan that he gave up more than 1 run, (pretty darn impressive), as he finished the season 6-0 with a 1.62 ERA. I speak for the team in saying you’re welcome back anytime you’d like Dett! Obviously the guy’s a phenomenal talent, and the stats speak for themselves, but Nathan was as nice a guy as you’ll ever find in this world and it was an absolute blast having him in Savannah for a couple months. Big things will be coming from that man in the future, I can tell you that much.

Dett had plenty of room to fool around and give up a run or two, because the Nanners bats were hot as per usual. In the bottom of the 2nd, Cole, I Wanted to do a Backflip in My Dance-Off With That Little Girl SO BAD, Kitchen, rocketed a double down the right field line. The next man up, Bill, “Man I Need to Start Hitting This Summer” (As He’s Hitting .304), Knight, brought home Cole with a line-drive single. In the bottom of the 3rd, Jesse, You Better Know I’m Not Missing Another Championship Because of a Late Season Injury, Sherrill, lead off the inning with a single and Livan, I’ve Decided I’m Destroying Balls for the Rest of the Summer, Reinoso, walked. That set up Danny, I’ll Never Let Biko Live Down This Home Run Call, Oberst, who lined a 3-run homer to left-center, and I pulled a reverse John Sterling…

Most of the time you see the ball go out, but sometimes you don’t and then you sound like a fool. Unfortunately for me this was one of those latter times.

Anyhow, you win some you lose some. The Spartanburgers charged back with 2 singles and a double in the 6th to tie the game at 4. The game wasn’t knotted at 4 for long though, as Cole and Bill were back at it again in the bottom of half of the 6th. Cole singled, stole second, got to 3rd as the throw from the catcher went into center, and Bill drove Kitch in again, this time with a sacrifice fly to left. The fellas clinged to their 1-run lead until the bottom of the 8th when Danny lead off the inning with a walk and Zane, The Team’s Best Cha Cha Slider, Denton, lined a single to right center sending Oberst to 3rd. Bryson, I’m About to Go HAM, Bloomer, drove Danny in with a sac fly to left. With 2 down, Bill Knight drove in his 3rd run of the evening as he singled in Zane to make it 7-4. After an inning and two-thirds of scoreless ball from Matthew, This is Just a Warmup for Faith and Family Night on Friday, Steidl, the ball was handed to Dylan, Start the Bus, Cunningham, who promptly struck out the side for his 3rd save of the summer. Nanners win 7-4 and improve to 29-6. After the win I found Danny on the trainer’s table in the locker room and saw a perfect opportunity for an interview…

I wholeheartedly regret not mounting Danny about halfway through the interview, but hey, you live and you learn.

On Wednesday the guys took to the road to take on the Blowfish up in Lexington County.

The offense wasted no time getting rolling as Jesse bounced a ball over the pitchers mound for an infield single, and didn’t get to fool around on the bases at all because Livan rocketed a two-run homer 333 feet out to right field. Then with one out, Eduardo, Finally I Get the Respect I Deserve Around Here and My Teammates Carry Me to the PlateMalinowski, lined a base hit up the middle and Bryson bounced a single through the left side. Bill Knight walked and then with Zane at the dish, Eduardo came in to score on a wild pitch. Zane worked a walk to re-load the bases and Clarno came through with his CPL leading 5th sac fly of the summer, to bring home Bryson from 3rd.

With a 4-0 lead to work with, Ryan, These Guys Couldn’t Have Thrown the Ball Into the Outfield Into Better Spots, Kennedy, gave up a bloop double down the left field line and then a bloop single to right, which lead to only his 3rd earned run given up on the summer. An unearned run would come in as well, and the Bananas would leave the 1st inning with a 4-2 lead. After 1-2-3 half innings by both teams in the 2nd, Eduardo got the 3rd inning going with a hard groundball through the right side. Bryson and Bill walked, and Clarno stroked a grounder through the left side to bring home Eduardo. Drew, I’ll Have Four Bombs by the End of the Summer, Yniesta, smoked a two-run single up the middle, bringing home Bryson and Bill. Jesse actually flirted with a dinger himself, lining a sac fly deep to right field to bring Clarno across the dish. Livan had no intentions of flirting, as he blasted his second two-run home run of the game 370 feet to right-center to make it 10-2 Bananas. With his second two home run game of the summer under his belt just 3 innings in, Eduardo asked Livan if he planned to hit another, to which Livan said, “I don’t know, if I feel like it I guess.”

It was really just a tune up start for Ryan Kennedy, so he only went 2.2 innings, giving up 2 runs, 1 of them earned, and striking out 5 Blowfish hitters. His ERA went up to 0.84, still the best among qualified CPL pitchers. Quinn, Deuces Wild, Mason, came in with 2 on and 2 out and threw 2 pitches, getting a groundout on his second toss to end the inning. Lexington County pushed 3 runs across in the 4th, causing Tyler, I’m Sending All Interview Requests to Reggie for the Rest of the Season, Gillum and Corey, The Mariano Rivera of D2 Baseball, Pye, to bring in Andrew, Let Them Eat Donuts, Armstrong. Andrew did what Andrew does, and picked off his 5th runner in just his 8th appearance of the summer. The Seminole then tossed 3.2 hitless innings of relief, while striking out 5. His efforts earned him the CPL Pitching Line of the Night, although the official scorekeeper did credit him with Cole Kitchen’s first inning of relief (I’ve since had this fixed by the league).

“I felt great,” Andrew said. “I just felt like all my pitches were working tonight, and I also appreciate the CPL giving me an extra inning and 2 of Cole’s strikeouts.”

The Bananas brought home 2 more runs in the top of the 8th inning, as Eduardo and Bryson both singled and scored, each for the third time on the evening on both fronts. A wild pitch brought in Eduardo and a bases loaded walk from Clarno pushed home Bryson. Then Cole Kitchen came in and tossed 2 scoreless innings, picking up 3 strikeouts, and locking up the 12-5 win for the boys.

It was a wild ride from start to finish, and it was just our luck that Bill, This is Actually the Highlight of My Summer, Leroy, was doing play-by-play for Livan’s second homer of the game…

“It was an amazing experience, and there was no home run I would rather call than Livan’s second of the day. That thing sent my heart racing and now I really can’t wait until the next time I get the opportunity to share a booth with Biko.”

It was a real treat to share the booth with Bill, something I would get to do on Friday for a couple innings as well!

In a Bananas offensive explosion, there was certain to be some stat lines worth singling out:

Livan: 3-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 2 R, 2 BB

Eduardo: 3-6, 3 R

Bryson: 3-4, 3 R, 1 BB

Clarno: 2-2, 3 RBI, 1 R, 2 BB

I don’t know about you, but looking at these impressive nights from the fellas just brings joy to my heart. A good box score gets me going, what can I say.

So a third of the way through their six games in six days with two wins under their belts, the tigers headed back home for their final showdown of the summer with the Spartanburgers.

Before any of the action though on Thursday, the Nanners made an announcement that sent ripples through the collegiate sports world…

I know I’m on the inside of this all and I may be slightly bias, but this is genius. I truly could not think of a better way to go after the new NIL rules in the NCAA than with jerseys literally with everyone’s face on them. July 30th is gonna be a wild scene.

When it came to the starting lineup for Thursday’s game, well the guys showed just how versatile they can be…

It’s the mixture of grunts and chuckles as each guy hops on the pyramid that does it for me. Also, a side note from the author here, I actually feel bad for teams when they have to face Joe, Nobody’s Put a Ball in Play Against Me While I’m Mic’d Up This Summer, Miller. To the Burgers credit, they didn’t strikeout in the first, but they did go down 1-2-3, and stop me if you’ve heard this before: the Bananas pounced early. Jesse lead off with a walk, swiped 2nd (as he does), and then moved to 3rd on an Eduardo single to put runners on the corners. Livan crushed a ball to the back of the track in left, bringing home Jesse and sending Eddie to 2nd. With two down in the inning, Bryson (who if you’ll remember was 3-4 the night before), had an incredible at-bat…

With 3 runs to fool around with, Joe hopped on the mic with me in the 2nd inning and promptly struck out the side. Miller then picked up 2 more K’s in the 3rd, inspiring his guys to put a few more runs on the board. Eduardo worked a one out walk, and then with two down Cole singled Eddie home, Bryson doubled Malinowski home, and Ty, I’ve Earned Myself a Lifetime Contract With the Bananas, Jackson, singled in Bloomer….

It always feels great seeing the guys come through after an eccentric walkup to the dish.

Joe then picked up two more strikeouts just for good measure, to push his league leading total to 64 on the summer (a 12 K cushion), as he tossed 4 innings of no-hit ball, (it’s so gosh darn fun to watch him cut through every lineup he faces like a piping hot knife through butter that’s been left out in the kitchen for a few hours).

Jesse walked for the 2nd time, stole 2nd base for the 2nd time, and then scored for the 2nd time on a wild pitch to make it 7-0 Savannah in the bottom of the 4th. The Burgers would get their one run on the evening in the top of the 6th, as Davis, I Honestly Deserve an At-Bat Before the Regular Season is Over, Hare, threw 3 innings of 1 run, 2 strikeout ball.

Obviously the Bananas needed to respond as they were now only up 6 runs, and Eduardo got the boys going in the bottom of the 7th with a leadoff double. He got do 3rd on a Livan grounder to 2nd and came home on a Cole grounder to 2nd, to push the lead back up to 7 runs. Bryson then decided that lead wasn’t good enough for the team and one dinger on the night was not good enough for himself…

By the way, shoutout Savannah, We All Get Class Rings in Texas, Alaniz, for quite possibly the greatest caption on a home run my eyes have ever seen. Also, really cool stuff there from Bryson of course.

Jared, “Who’s Your Daddy?”, Beck, came in and picked up a strikeout with a couple groundouts to Eddie at 2nd and then the Nanners decided a 9th inning was unnecessary. Zane started the 8th by reaching on an error, Bill singled, and then Drew went absolute garbanzo beans 413 feet to left center…

Yniesta bombs are back and I for one could not be happier. Also shoutout Jenna, Sure Baseball is Cool but Drag Racing is My True Passion, Arend, for the assist on the call.

The inning certainly wasn’t over yet though, as Jesse singled, got to 2nd on a wild pitch, and then stole 3rd. With the mercy rule walk-off run on 90 feet away, the Burgers intentionally walked Livan and Cole to pitch to… oh the guy with 2 homers on the night and 6 hits in his last 8 at-bats, Bryson Bloomer. On the first pitch he saw Bryson lined a single to left, bringing in Jesse, and true to the reason the rules exists, mercifully ending the game 13-1 in 8 innings. Bryson rightfully got the CPL line of the night, although Joe probably deserved it too…

I caught up with Bryson on 2nd base for a very intimate postgame interview…

I wish more than anything that we had another camera to show you how wildly Alex, I Cannot Stand Open Toes, Marinelli, was silently flailing about, trying to get the totally unaware drummer to stop hammering on his instrument, and failing miserably. I can tell you one thing for certain though, it was not for a lack of effort.

The Nanners packed their bags once again on Friday to head up to Lexington County, for what would be one of the best games of the summer. While they were heading up I-95, on the other side of the world the Bananas Premier Team coach was taking part in the Olympic Opening Ceremony in Tokyo…

Incredibly cool to see the great Nate Fish ready to coach the heck out of 3rd base for Team Israel. A big shoutout for the two Premier Team guys playing for Team Israel too, as the righty submariner Shlomo Lipetz at 42 years old will be the 2nd oldest Olympic baseball player ever and catcher Nick Rickles has been the hottest bat for Israel coming into the Olympics. Both guys played for Adam, I Can’t Wait Until the Party Animals Become Even Bigger Than the Bananas, Moreau, as they dawned the black and pink in the Spring Series this past March.

Okay, back to the CPL Bananas. Looking to win their 4th game in 4 days, the Nanners turned to Kyle, I Invited Two Ladies to the Game and Then Didn’t Get Them Tickets, Luigs, who made his 1st start on the road in his 8th start of the summer. In the bottom of the 2nd he walked a couple Blowfish, setting up an RBI single, a bunt single, and 2 RBI groundouts to make it 3-0 Lexington County.

The Bananas were ready to strike back immediately though, as Ty lead off the 3rd with a walk and Cole lined a double off the right field wall to set up 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Eduardo bounced an RBI groundout to short, as Cole scooted his tuchus to 3rd base. Livan also slapped an RBI grounder to short to cut the Blowfish lead to 1. Then Danny lined a base hit to right setting up Bryson for this…

Guy seems to be swinging a decent bat at this point huh. But the Blowfish came right back in the bottom half, getting 2 singles and a big 2-out triple that just made it under the diving attempt of Drew in right. Lexington County would get one more run on a wild pitch to take a 6-4 lead.

Leading off the top of the 4th, Drew destroyed his 2nd homer in as many games to left-center to cut the Lexington County lead to 1. Matthew Steidl came in and gave up a run in the bottom of the 4th on a balk with a man on 3rd and 2 down to make it 7-5 Blowfish.

In the top of the 6th, Ty bounced an infield single to short, stole 2nd, and then was driven in on a clutch 2-out single from Eduardo to once again cut the lead to 1. Steidl, who is the resident messiah for the Nanners, was feeling the power of Faith and Family night and ended up going a season-high 4 innings of relief, giving up just the 1 run and striking out 6. Unfortunately for Matthew, he’s been so gosh darn good this summer that the outing spiked his ERA by 0.12 as it went all the way up to 1.77.

Nolan, I was Nearly Unhittable in the 8th Inning, Daniel, threw a 1-2-3 bottom of the 8th, to send the Nanners up for last licks just down a run. With 1 out, Livan chopped an infield single to 3rd, and was pinch run for by Jesse. For the 2nd straight at-bat, Danny destroyed a ball straight to the centerfielder, which brought up Bryson with the Nanners down to their final out. On a 1-1 pitch, Bloomer did it again…

Banana pants bonkers stuff from The Boomer. Bryson gave the Nanners an 8-7 lead going into the bottom of the 9th, and Nolan went back out there to try and close it out. With an 0-2 count on the first hitter he nailed him in the helmet with an 89mph fastball. The next man lined a single up the middle to put the tying run in scoring position and the winning run on 1st. Then things looked to turn to the Bananas favor, as the Blowfish tried for a sac bunt but popped it up a couple feet in the air, and freshly substituted in for defense behind the plate in the 9th, Bill Leroy, made a diving catch and fired to 2nd in time for a miraculous double play. The next hitter walked and Riley, Smiley, Cameron smacked a walk-off, 2-run double off the right field wall to win the game 9-8 for Lexington County. It was certainly a tough loss for the Nanners, but it was also a good reminder of just how much has to go wrong for this team to lose a game. This is not normal. The Bananas drop to 31-7 on the season.

Luckily for the fellas, they had another crack at the Blowfish the next day at home. Over and over again this summer, in the few times opponents have gotten the best of the Nanners, the guys have responded with resounding statement wins. The Saturday good vibes started with a team-wide shirtless batting practice to get the boys loose, and they arrived at game time ready to absolutely rumble.

Tom, I Must Follow My Partner in Crime Off Into a Lone Star State Sunset, Vincent, was making his last start of the summer, just three days after Dett did the same. Tom gave up a booming 2-out double off the centerfield wall, a walk, and then this happened…

Colby, I Couldn’t Have Thrown That Ball Into a Better Spot Down the Line, Seltzer, drove in one on the single but thanks to quick, on the money throw from Zane in shallow left, the inning ended with only the one run coming in. The really bad news for the Bananas on the play is that their star shortstop, the best leadoff hitter on the Eastern Seaboard, Jesse Sherrill got pretty banged up on his diving attempt. It seems like he just twisted his knee, which is pretty similar to the injury that cut his 2020 summer in Savannah about a week short, but he said this instance doesn’t feel close to as bad and he’s very optimistic he’ll be back at short by the end of next week. He’ll take a trip to Statesboro to check in with the Georgia Southern training staff to make sure it’s nothing too crazy. Obviously the guy who’s 4th in the CPL with his .363 AVG and 2nd in the league with his .480 OBP, all while stealing bases at will, is a pretty important man to have for the playoff push. Here’s to hoping it’s nothing serious and Jesse has a speedy recovery, both for the phenomenal 2nd year Nanner and of course the team as a whole.

Tom got in a spot of trouble in the top of the 3rd after a pair of seeing eye singles to start off the inning, and Gillum pulled his starter for the last time this summer. Tom, like Dett just a few days earlier, got a very much deserved standing O from the Grayson faithful as he left the mound. He was then left on the edge of his feet, as Andrew Armstrong came in to try and quell the threat. Andrew strode in with the mentality of that one fish in SpongeBob who says, “How many times doe we have to teach you this lesson, old man?”. Except sub out “we” for “me” and “old man” for “Blowfish.” You know what, I’ll just throw the clip in and it will make everything a lot easier…

Makes sense right? Oh jeeze I hope so. Anyways, Andrew, with the mentality of that very angry cartoon fish, got a strikeout, walk, strikeout, and flyout, to strand the bases loaded. So with his two runners stranded on 2nd and 3rd, that truly put an end to Tom Vincent’s summer in Savannah, and boy what a summer it was. Tom hadn’t thrown in a collegiate baseball game in his career before Savannah, as the freshman from Texas A&M had to have Tommy John surgery on April 30th of 2020 which forced him to red shirt his first season in College Station while he rehabbed. Once he was back in business, he was throwing live at-bats to his teammates during mid-week practices this spring, but that certainly does not emulate what it’s like to have over 4,000 crazed fans trying to cheer you through high pressure situations in real games. But the kid has onions in his bones, and in 10 appearances, 5 of them starts, he was 2-0 with a 1.92 ERA over 23.1 innings pitched. And just like his good friend Nathan Dettmer, you’ll have trouble finding a better guy out there than Tom. Absolute blast to be around, the guy is the definition of a mensch. I can’t wait to see what the Houston kid can do back in his hometown throwing for Rice University this upcoming season.

So with the book closed on the two terrific A&M freshman, the Pride of Flowery Branch, Georgia, went back out there and stranded a couple more of Lexington County’s finest on the bags in the top of the 4th. It was up to Livan to get the guys going in the bottom half, and boy did he do that…

Danny immediately got the job done, bouncing an RBI groundout to shortstop to even the game at a run apiece. Bryson then worked a walk, had 2nd base stolen easily on a pitch Bill Knight fouled off, and then was picked off and nearly made it to 2nd again but was thrown out by the first baseman Brock, The Sock, Vradenburg. Bill, Zane, and Bill (Leroy), worked back to back to back walks, to load the bases and send the flame-throwing lefty Magdiel, The Grotto, Cotto, to the dugout. Ty worked the count to 3-2 against the new man on the mound, Bryan, The High Flyin’, Kowalski, and then came up with the biggest hit of the game…

Also, sorry to both Bill’s for calling Leroy, Knight. It gets tricky when you’re excited and Knight scores the first run on the play and then all of a sudden Leroy is barreling around 3rd from 1st base on a routine single up the middle. As a great philosopher once said: “You win some, you lose some.” By the way, the only thing I love more than Gillum sending Bill home on that play, is Bill’s horrible attempt at jumping Bryce, I Love Rice, Stober, at home plate. Guy tried to go full Chris Coghlan, circa April 25th, 2017, and ended up giving Stober a nice leaping hug. Here’s what was about to happen in Bill’s head right before he went airborne…

Literally one of the most incredible plays in MLB history. Anyhow, I’m always vouching for guys to try and go full Chris Coghlan when they’re dead meat at the plate, and it’s the thought that counts here for Bill.

Andrew went one more frame, starting a sweet 1-6-3 double play and picking up his 4th strikeout to make it 6.2 scoreless innings on the week against the Blowfish, allowing only 2 hits while striking out 9. Again:

Okay, I’m officially unhinged at this stage in the weekly recap but we’ve almost hit the finish line here so I’ll try to make it across without too much more nonsense. The bottom of the 5th started with a line drive single from Clarno, a walk to Eduardo, and a line drive single from Livan. None other than Bryson Bloomer came up with the 2-run single with a liner ricocheting off Vradenburg’s glove at 1st into right field. Christian, “What Do I Have to do to be the Player of the Game?”, Dearman, retired all 9 Blowfish he faced, striking out 4 of them (I’m sorry Dearman we had this whole weird plan before the game that ended up getting the kibosh from the fire marshal… But anyways, you will be honored for your hard work in the near future, don’t you worry).

Okay, okay, bear down Biko. Stay on topic. In the 8th, Drew pinch hit for Danny and shot a base hit through the left side. Man I’m hungry. Then Bryson flared a puppy into center for a knock. Bill skied a bloop RBI double down the right field line to bring in Yniesta. Bill Leroy blooped a little jobber to left to bring in Bloomer and Knight. It would be really nice if we just had some loose hot dogs here at the stadium that I could chomp on. Ty shot a single through the left side to bring in Bill, and just like that it was 9-1 Nanners.

Dylan Cunningham came in for the 9th and gave up an unearned run (currently earned online but that’s an incorrect scoring, Biko will have it changed). And the boys won 9-2. There’s your dominating statement win in response to the rare loss the night before. The guys are now 9-2 against Lexington County on the summer (kind of cool they beat them 9-2 aye), and 32-7 overall (remember they also beat the Bacon 19-3, to improve to 19-3 on the summer… Crazy!) They gained one game on the Pilots, to close the week with a 3-game lead for the best record in the CPL, with 5 games left in the regular season.

Oh also alongside his 12-20, 4 homer, 2 double, 12 RBI, 9 run week, Bryson also has 1.3 million (pinky to the mouth Dr. Evil move) views on this Tik Tok of him walking to the plate to Kahoot! music. Go off king!

So I think that wraps it up. Bryson is obviously the offensive star of the week, let’s sauce Andrew Armstrong the pitcher of the week for his ownage of Lexington County, and let’s give Clarno the Most Valuable Goofball for him locking down that exterminator commercial. My grandpa Larry always preaches delayed gratification: the idea that the work you put in today will pay off in the future, and that’s exactly what Clarno munching that live cockroach in the locker room for the boys is. The fruits of his labor are here in full force!

Oh and just one last instance of the Bananas dominating baseball media before I go…

The ole’ World Wide Leader in Sports, not too shabby. And that was after it made the rounds on all the usual suspects on Twitter, Tik Tok, and Instagram. Nutso.

Alrighty, that’s all I’ve got this week. 5 games in 5 days. You can tell how wiped I am by the fact that I used the number 5 instead of typing out five there. At the start of this story I was gung-ho, typing “six games in six days” with fire in my loins. Anyhow, I now realize that I’m just prolonging the inevitable and will actually wrap this up. That was a fun week! Now we have game number 6 in 6 days today in Macon with 2 days off on the horizon. Pregame will be at 6:50 eastern on Bananas Insiders, first pitch at 7:00! Only 5 games left. Time flies when you’re having fun!
