The Savannah Bananas are excited to announce that in agreement with the Lexington County Blowfish and the Macon Bacon, the formation of the 2020 Southern Summer Ball Series. The series will take part between the three teams, all in the Coastal Plain League, as part of the league’s adjusted schedule. Even with changes to the full 2020 Coastal Plain League regular season schedule due to crowd size limitations in various states, the Blowfish, Bacon and Bananas are moving forward with schedule of games beginning on July 1.
The Bananas and Bacon have taken the appropriate steps to meet guidelines for social distancing, safety protocols, and sanitation while also working with local officials. The Blowfish, based in Lexington County, South Carolina are also working within the safety guidelines and social distancing measures established in their community allowing them to play games this summer with limited capacity. All three teams will be testing players for Covid-19 prior to arrival as well as upon arrival and will institute temperature and symptoms screenings for the players and coaches each day. Additional health measures for players, fans, and staff have also been implemented.
“We had to get creative to be able to have a season this year with so much unknown across different states. Breaking the league in to regional play this year is the only way we can guarantee games this summer,” said Jesse Cole, Bananas team owner. “We know it will be different for fans and players, but it is positive news for everyone.”
The Southern Summer Ball Series will kick off July 1 in Savannah. There will be a first half and second half winner based on best winning percentage with the first half winner hosting the Southern Summer Ball Series Championship game on Sunday, August 16.
The original home schedule for the Bananas stays the same and ends on September 3. However, due to necessary schedule adjustments, the teams will play an unbalanced schedule against each other and fill out their schedule with games against other regional summer collegiate teams.
