Top 7 Moments from a Bananas Weekend in Birmingham, Alabama

Written by Biko Skalla:

For the second-straight year, Birmingham, Alabama, was an amazing host city for Banana Ball. It is tough to find a more powerful scene than packing the oldest ballpark in the country, Rickwood Field, with over 10,000 fans, bringing one of the most legendary stadiums in our nation’s pastime back to life. Regions Field, Rickwood’s grandchild, turned out to be an amazing temporary home for Bananaland as well. In fact, the powerful crowd at Region’s Field made their imprint on Banana Ball history right away on Friday night…

Reece Hampton Fouls Out to a Fan to Kickoff the Weekend, Again!!

This is the exact same way our weekend in Vegas began…

The funny thing about Banana Ball is this was the only foul ball caught by a fan all weekend! One and done. Reece would single in his next at-bat to extend his on-base streak to 27 straight games!

History Time in The Ham!

The Bananas and Party Animals combined for 16 trick plays on Friday night (6 from the Nanners, 10 from the Animals), to set the single-game Banana Ball record! Funny enough, the last two trick plays of the evening were the first and last out of the second-fastest inning in our young sport’s history…

Sometimes you just get lost in the sauce when highlight plays are being sent your way at a historic pace. Speaking of highlight plays being made at a historical pace…

The behind-the-back bounce pass from Chase Achuff to Dustin Baber is one of my favorite trick plays of all-time. Incredible stuff all around from the fellas!

When it came to the game at the center of the circus it was a terrific back-and-forth affair. The Bananas led 1-0, Party Animals jumped ahead 2-1, Nanners tied it at 2 each, then the Animals jumped back ahead 3-2. But in the bottom of the 9th Tucker Perry lost the zone, giving up three straight sprints to Michael Deeb, Dan Oberst, and Dakota McFadden, gifting the Bananas a 4-3 walk-off win.

Before we talk about the ballgame in Rickwood we need to look at the second picture in this collage to get an idea of how magical it is seeing the oldest baseball stadium in the country jam packed with fans…

Rickwood is Brought Back to Life

I also have probably stared at the DR Meadows streamer gun picture for hours at this point. It’s hypnotizing!

Some good shots from the Party Animals side of the coin too…

Magical Start for the Bananas

Can’t draw it up much better than this…

Well I guess it could get better if Kyle Luigs follows the hot start with 5 scoreless frames and the Bananas capitalize on his excellent pitching by walking off each of the first five innings (that’s exactly what happened). Michael “Vitamin” Deeb was right in the middle of the action…

Big weekend for Vitamin Deeb! He may have had a little something to do with this next highlight too, as he told his roommate, Dakota McFadden, on Friday night that D-Mac was going yard on Saturday. It was a smart prediction to make from the Notre Dame graduate, as McFadden’s parents were in the stands…

These outfielders and their fake catches. The percentage of homers where they trick our terrific camera operators is surprisingly high. Absolute palookas.

The Party Animals would scratch a run off Bill Lee in the top of the 6th and Jake Lialios held serve in the bottom half to earn their first point of the night. The Nanners offense in the 7th, and then their big lefties in the pen, 6’5″ Connor Higgins in the 8th and 6’6″ Ryan Kellogg making his Bananas debut in the 9th, made sure that was the only point the Animals would score in Rickwood.

Now for a video that cracks me up…

Kyle Luigs: Songbird of Our Generation?

Looks like your title is safe for now Mr. Mauldin.

With the Bananas sweeping Birmingham they’ve won Alabama 3 games to 1 (Montgomery was split 1-1). They add Bama to Tennessee and Florida, while the Party Animals have won Texas and Oklahoma, and currently lead Georgia by 4 games. Indiana and Ohio will be on the line this coming weekend, with games on Thursday and Friday night in Indianapolis and then Sunday and Monday night in Akron. The Nanners are now 8-1 in June, 25-21-2 overall, and only one game behind the Party Animals in the season series, who are now 18-17-2. We’ll see if the Bananas can stay hot in Indy or if the Party Animals can get back to their winning ways!
