Weekly Recap: Bananas Finish Wild Regular Season with Win of the Year at Home

Well that was an insane, historic, heart racing week in BananaLand. I’m here a day ahead of schedule because the playoffs start tomorrow and we’ll have wall-to-wall content to pump out and also the guys’ game in Lexington County tonight means nothing for either side, so let’s just recap what the final week in Savannah was like now so we can go playoffs crazy on Sunday.

It all started last Sunday night in Macon as the fellas had their 6th game in 6 days. It would be the final regular season start of the summer for the CPL ERA leader Ryan, My Dancing GIF Will be the Most Used Piece of Content from the NIL Shoot, Kennedy, and he was stellar as per usual, allowing 3 runs, none of them earned, with 10 K’s in 5 innings. He finished the regular season 3rd overall with his 53 strikeouts in 37 innings pitched, and easily lead the league with his 0.76 ERA. Really good stuff there, and to celebrate such an incredible 3rd year in Savannah for Ryan, we’ll take a trip to the future to checkout that GIF that I love so…

Lookout Maceo, Ryan’s coming for your job!

The best offense in the CPL was powered by terrific performances from:

Zane Denton: 3-4, 2 R

Nick Clarno: 3-5, 2B, RBI

Bill LeRoy: 2-4, RBI, 2 R

Ty Jackson: 2-5, RBI

Just to give you an idea of how deep the Bananas lineup is each and every night, Ty was the leadoff hitter, Clarno hit 5th, Zane hit 8th, and Bill hit 9th. There are no breaks as you make your way through the order. The Bananas scored just under their average amount of runs-per-game, as they knocked off the Bacon 7-4. Besides Riley, I’m Never Combining Sushi with Chocolate Milk Again, Wooten, throwing up on me on the bus, that’s pretty much all the big action from Sunday. I’m gonna keep these weekly recaps a little lighter words wise, as you can always go back and read my nightly write ups for every game already.

On Monday, we released a video we had recorded before the Military Appreciation game back on July 3rd, and I have to say this is one of the most fun projects I have ever been a part of…

Shoutout to Ben, I Think This is the Year ‘The Legend of Thurgood the Reindeer’ Really Takes Off, Sheffield, as he wrote and directed the video, and as you can tell did an unbelievable job with both aspects. You can also glimpse a shot or two of the incredibly talented Nick, You Would Never Guess How Much I Enjoy a Good Rave, Freeman, as he was all over the place filming it with Ben. Also, obviously, (feels like an Oscar acceptance speech at this rate), shoutout Eduardo, Bird Seed is Actually One of My Favorite Snacks Now, Malinowski, for being such a good sport, and doing a terrific job scarfing down the parakeet food that Jesse, I Was Born for This Role, Sherrill, had in his hand. What an absolute blast this whole thing was to do.

Then later on Monday, Steve, I Know When a Moment Deserves a Shirt, from Roosevelts, unveiled a shirt more than worthy of Big Tiger Friday action…

I don’t know how long it will be available, because a lot of their shirts are only up for 48 hours, but if this is your style, (I’m not afraid to say it is very much my style), then go after it! Specialty shirt sales only last for a couple days, but the shirts themselves will be with you forever if you make the right choice!

And how about his for timing…

Unreal stuff. Just unreal.

With Bill, If You Wanna Catch a Shark, You’re Gonna Have to Get a Few Stingrays First, Leroy, getting enough of attention online to last a year, it was time to let the legend himself, Reginald, “COME ON!!!!!!!!!”, Horton, take centerstage as the Bananas brought back the Harlem Shake…

Probably a top 10 internet trend of all-time, and of course executed to perfection in BananaLand.

It was a great way to get revved up for the final three regular season games against the Bacon, as it was their tough luck that they had to face Joe, I Think the Cape Missed Out on a Decent Arm Here, Miller, for the 5th time on the summer. Joe gave up his first homer of the season in the 1st inning for his only 2 runs of the night, and went on to strikeout 7 guys in 4.1 innings of work to push his CPL lead to 71 K’s overall, 17 more than 2nd place! Joe’s 1.50 ERA will be 2nd best overall, just trailing his teammate Ryan Kennedy.

An RBI double from Livan, ”If You’re Gonna Sign Dayan, How in the World Are You Not Gonna Take Me Too?”, Reinoso. He knocked in 2 more with a 2-out single in the 2nd to give the Nanners their first lead of the night. Then Ty, I Could Survive if I Jumped Off This Bridge, Jackson and Livan took off for 3rd and 2nd, and Ryan, I Couldn’t do This Again in 1,000 Tries, Leitch, did something absurd…

Literally one of the most insane things I’ve ever seen on a baseball diamond.

Drew, I Mean Insurance is Nice, Yniesta made it 6-2 with an RBI single in the 3rd, and then Cole, Well I Doubt We’ll Need These Runs, Kitchen, drove in 2 more with a single in the 7th.

The Bacon rallied for 5 in the 8th to make it a one-run game (thank you insurance runs), but Dylan, That’s Enough Funny Business for One Evening, Cunningham, nailed down the 4-out save, striking out 3, as the Bananas won 8-7.

After one of the craziest weeks in his 4-year Banana career, I had to invite Bill LeRoy out for a date that he will never forget…

What a special moment that was for the two of us… Oh and we were not joking about the storm we had seen the night before: It was literally the craziest thunder and lightning any of us had ever seen.

The guys shipped back to Macon on Thursday and Livan got things going right off the bat in the 1st inning with a 411 foot bomb for his 5th homer of the summer. The guys would retake the lead in the 3rd as they batted around and pushed 5 runs across. The rally was highlighted by a Bryson, Just Get Me to the Plate with Two Outs in the 9th, Bloomer, 2-run double, a Nick, I Hope People Realize That on Top of All the Goofy Antics I’m Actually Raking This Summer, Clarno, RBI single, and a Bill, I Know How to Hit in This Thick Macon Air, Knight, RBI double.

The guys would score 5 more in the 7th, with the exclamation point coming on a dead-chedd 414 foot 2-run blast for Bill’s first homer of the summer. Bloomer drove one more run home in the 8th for good measure, as the Bananas stomped the Bacon 12-4. Here were your offensive stars of the night:

Ty: 2-5, 2B, 3 R, 2 SB

Livan: 2-5, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R

Bryson: 2-4, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R, SB

Bill: 3-4, HR, 2B, 3 RBI, 1 R, SB

With the win the Nanners secured home field advantage throughout the playoffs and also won the CPL West 2nd Half all in one fell swoop…

Two division titles in the books in one season. Light work!

That set the guys up for 2 tune up games to finish up the regular season, but Friday night wouldn’t be your run of the mill ballgame because it was NIL night…

Quite possibly the coolest jersey idea of all-time. I don’t know, I guess I’m biased, but these puppies fired me up so much. All the game worn jerseys were auctioned off during the game, and right now (for 48 hours), replicas of everyone’s jersey will be available on the Bananas website right here…

https://thesavannahbananas.com/replicaniljerseys/

When it came to game time, it seemed like the Bacon were determined to end their 20-game summer against the Nanners on a high note as they took a 2-0 in the 2nd. Danny, “Did People Forget How Good I am at Baseball?”, Oberst, lined an RBI single in the 3rd to bring home Jesse, to cut the lead in half. Macon responded with 3 runs in the 4th to make it 5-1. The Nanners fought back with 2 in the 5th as Bill Knight missed a grand slam by a few feet…

Darn that pole holding up the grandstands. They really weren’t thinking about television when they rebuilt the place in 1941. Anyhow, Bill would have to take the sac fly on the play, and then Ty lined a 2-out RBI single up the middle to make it 5-3. Eddie doubled to lead off the 7th and then Danny did this…

That took approximately 3.3 seconds to leave Grayson Stadium. How is a play-by-play broadcaster expected to describe such a thing in so little time? Pretty selfish of you Danny to not think of your buddy in the booth who has to call the play. A little less velo and a little more launch angle would be appreciated next time, thanks.

To the Bacon’s credit, those sons a’ guns slapped another run on the board in the 8th to take their 3rd lead of the evening, this time 6-5. The Bananas were all the way down to their final out in the 9th when Bryson came up to the dish, and I don’t think I can describe what happened next better than I did in the moment…

This may be my favorite video ever to come out of BananaLand, and that’s not something I throw around lightly. This is one of the numerous times during the summer where I thank my lucky stones that I work with such unbelievably talented people. Nick Freeman with the dynamite shots of the game tying homer and the Bill LeRoy walk-off, and Alex, ”Ya Know, Loose Toes are When They’re Just Hanging Brain”, Marinelli, with the perfect edit to tie it all together. Plus you throw in the picture perfect shots of action with pure cuteness mixed in leading up to the madness at the end. So cool. ALSO, how about Bill getting his 2nd career Nanners walk-off in the final game of the regular season, when his game-worn NIL jersey had already sold for more than anyone else’s ($305!). Now that shirt has a walk-off in it. That’s quite awesome. His only other walk-off? Well the first game ever in kilts of course, all the way back in 2018. Sports!

Oh and a couple more Bananas break the internet nominations for you before I wrap up. Bryson has been letting people on Tik Tok pick his walk up song and then the Bananas get somewhere around 2 million views as he comes up the plate with it…

And with all that taken care of, that’s basically how we got to today. The Bananas have one more ballgame before the playoffs, as they take on the Blowfish in Lexington County tonight. But as the game doesn’t have playoff implications, and we’re gonna be pumping out content on Sunday from dawn to dusk, Kara, The All-Knowing, Heater, made the wise decision that I should bang out the weekly recap now. And what a delight it is to put a bow on the week and transition to playoff baseball tomorrow! Oooweee I can barely contain my excitement as I dive whole-hog into research on Hi-Point Thomasville.

What I can tell you for now, is these boys can hit and they can be hit. They gave up 10 more homers than other team in the Coastal Plain League, but also clubbed 13 more than anyone else. They don’t hit for a tremendous average but they get on-base a lot, and because of their power lead the league in total bases.

The Bananas paced the CPL in most offense and pitching categories, and it’s gonna be a blast to see what they can do against the homer-happy Hi-Toms. Game 1, Sunday August 1st, in Historic Grayson Stadium. As the great Savanah, Never Trust a Rope at Daufuskie, Alaniz says best: TURN. ME. UP.
